Portsmouth,NH - Video conferencing changes court trials
For some Maine prisoners, a day in court no longer involves a long van ride, an uncomfortable public appearance or sitting through lengthy hearings.
In York, Kennebec and Aroostic counties, prisoners now stay in jail and appear before the judge by video conference for arraignments and other court appointments.
Use of the technology in the courtroom is safer, more efficient and less costly, said Ted Glessner, the State Court administrator. It also makes the judge's job a little easier, said District Court Judge Marilyn Stavros.
"If prisoners can remain in the custody of a sheriff, that's actually a good thing," Glessner said. "We don't have to worry about moving them from the jail to the court house. It avoids a number of potential problems."
The technology usage decreases costs, Glessner said, as police stations are not responsible for paying to drive prisoners to the closest court, in some cases up to two hours away.
