Cameras in the courtroom can counteract justice process
Having spent an hour on Sept. 19 debating the issue of cameras in the criminal courtroom with media attorney Mark Anfinson on Minnesota Public Radio’s “Midmorning” program and then reading the St. Cloud Times’ Our View summary of the media’s position on Sept. 20, I write to provide a prosecutor’s public safety perspective on this issue

A New Headache for Courts: Blogging Jurors
A New Hampshire case involving a juror who posted entries about court duty on his blog has raised the issue of juror blogging, which legal experts said may soon become a regular part of voir dire and jury instructions. The case involves Stephen Goupil, who was convicted in 2005 on five counts of sexual assault and one count of theft. New Hampshire v. Goupil, No. 2005-444. (N.H.). The juror foreman, Scott Vachon, made an entry in his blog in early 2005, four days before jury selection, in which he said he would have to "listen to the local riff-raff try and convince me of their innocence," according to court documents.

Tacoma,WA - Fancy gadgets replace oratory in courtrooms
Assistant district attorney Jack McCoy stands before 12 somber-faced jurors, delivering his closing argument in yet another ripped-from-the-headlines New York murder case. He booms about the evidence, the motive, the opportunity, his voice echoing through the dark-paneled courtroom with its marble floors and hardwood furniture. McCoy scowls. He pounds his right fist into his left hand. He points at the defendant and exhorts the jury to find him guilty. Makes great television, as the millions who watch “Law & Order” each week can attest. But in real courthouses, McCoy’s low-tech style is going the way of the shoeshine man. More and more often, prosecutors and other trial attorneys – including many in Pierce County – are embracing technology to make their arguments to juries and judges.

Canton, OH - Courts linked to Internet in 11 counties
Patterned after what Stark County courts have done for 11 years, the Ohio Supreme Court launched a pilot project this week to connect courts to an information database using the Internet. Seventeen courts in 11 counties will participate in the study, but those in Stark and Tuscarawas counties were not included.

Knoxville, IA - Video court safer & cheaper
Video court has been going on in Marion County for months now. The sheriff's office and Associate Court Judge Terry Wilson began utilizing the technology shortly after prisoners moved into the new law enforcement center in January. A closed-circuit television connection was made between the jail and the courthouse. Wilson has a monitor, with a camera and microphone attached, set up in his office. It is connected to a similar set up in the small courtroom at the law enforcement center.

Holographic evidence coming to a court near you
New technology that has already made its way into one courtroom in the United States could revolutionize trials but may also raise some ethical questions, according to one U.S. litigator. Joan Lukey, a partner with WilmerHale in Boston, told the Advocates’ Society 2007 Spring Symposium in Toronto recently that technology, such as new document presenters, digital video evidence, and 3D graphics, has changed the ground rules for evidence presentation and can enhance what happens in court. However, she says the newest example of technology that could revolutionize the courtroom is the use of holographic evidence.

Portsmouth,NH - Video conferencing changes court trials
For some Maine prisoners, a day in court no longer involves a long van ride, an uncomfortable public appearance or sitting through lengthy hearings. In York, Kennebec and Aroostic counties, prisoners now stay in jail and appear before the judge by video conference for arraignments and other court appointments. Use of the technology in the courtroom is safer, more efficient and less costly, said Ted Glessner, the State Court administrator. It also makes the judge's job a little easier, said District Court Judge Marilyn Stavros. "If prisoners can remain in the custody of a sheriff, that's actually a good thing," Glessner said. "We don't have to worry about moving them from the jail to the court house. It avoids a number of potential problems." The technology usage decreases costs, Glessner said, as police stations are not responsible for paying to drive prisoners to the closest court, in some cases up to two hours away.

St. Cloud,MN - Cameras in courtroom would help ensure justice
In an era defined by ever-improving technology, at a time when (mis?)perceptions of crime and accountability seem headed in opposite directions, and during a week promoting the importance of open government, we strongly endorse a renewed push to allow cameras in Minnesota courtrooms. A coalition of media groups — some of which the St. Cloud Times is a part of — wants the state Supreme Court to change rules so using cameras and audio recordings in trial courts is standard procedure. This is a good — and long-overdue — move for several reasons.
